Built in 1875 to warn of a rocky shoal and shifting sandbar in Lake Ontario. There is evidence of 5 major shipwrecks....if you like to scuba! One is the British naval vessel, The Ontario, which sank on Halloween night, 1780 with a loss of 75 men and $15,000 payroll.
The lighthouse is more then 60 feet high and was constructed of cut stone shipped by schooner from Chaumont Bay.
The lens installed for $15,000, was purchased from France.
The light produced 6000,000 candlepower and could be seen for 18 miles.
The lighthouse is now available for rent and is open all year round. I hear there is a one-year waiting list!
