This anchor was place here in honor of the men and women who served at Sampson Naval Training Station on Rt. 96A, Sampson, NY during it's operation from 1942 to 1946. The anchor was recovered from the depths of Seneca Lake on August 18, 1987 by the Seneca County Sheriff's Department Scuba Team. That had to be quite a feat considering the fact that Seneca Lake's average depth is 291 feet, maximum depth is 618 feet.
