Purple Heart with Gold Star in Lieu of second Purple Heart was posthumously awarded to Corporal Richard F. Sutter, 1st Platoon, Company "M", 3rd Battalion, 26th Marines.
The 21st of July 1967 had been a day of heavy enemy contact in the Khe Sanh area, beginning at 0525 hours, when 10 rounds of 82 mm mortar fire slammed into the Special Forces camp at Lang Vei. The really big contacts, however, were to the east of the base camp. First platoon Mike Company 3/26 was leading the company from a hill across a valley of thick elephant grass dotted by tree lines. A new trail was located and the patrol followed the trail east for some two hours when, at 0920 hours, the point squad entered the tree line and discovered huts on stilts and a bunker complex defensively oriented to the west. As the Marines advanced to investigate the position, the enemy opened fire with machine guns and small arms on the point squad and the rest of the first platoon. Corporal Richard F. Sutter was shot by enemy fire and killed on this mission. Corporal Sutter was serving in his 14th month in Vietnam waiting for his replacement (the normal tour of duty for Marines was 13 months).
Corporal Sutter's devotion to duty and that of his fallen comrades was in keeping with the highest traditions of the Marine Corps and the United States Naval Service. He gallantly gave his life for his country.
