The Sacred Heart Church has been faced with many challenges during the last almost 100 years with respect to the builiding and its properties.

In November of 1912 five lots were purchased for the church. In February of 1913 other properties owned by the church that were to be sold were not as the recession had set in in Calgary.

Having received approval of the Bishop for the development of the site and church plans and sketches were done for the new church. However, costs escalating and the desire of the parish council to construct a larger church to expand were dropped as the policy of the church at that time was to keep borrowing to only a small portion of the costs.

During the first World War offerings were small and it was not until 1924 that the debt for the purchase of the lots were paid off. By 1929 a $45,000 building fund had accumulated leading to a small sod turning in July of 1930. The new church was opened informally by Christmas of 1930 for mass. It was solemnly blessed in February of 1931. At this time the church was only half of that planned in 1913.


Although substantially completed it was not until 1957 that the upper part of the steeple and the carillon were added. During the same year the extra lots from the original land purchase, that were virtually forgotten about were sold. It is likely this land sale that allowed, or reduced the debt for construction of the steeple and carillon.
