Crownhill Fort is a Victorian fortress; building started in 1863 and finished in 1872, designed by Captain Edmund Du Cane the fort was built at a cost of £76, 409. Crownhill Fort was once fully armed and has four fighting levels and positions for 32 cannon. It is seven sided and covers an area of 16 acres. The Fort's Soldiers Quarters could accommodate 300 gunners.
During WW11 the Fort was thought to have been an anti-aircraft battery. The drawbridge was demolished during this time because it was unable to cope with the strain of heavy vehicles crossing over it.
The fort has various open days for visitors to look around, see website for details.
