The Rookery Building was designed in 1888 by the firm of Burnham and Root. It is among the Windy City's earliest and most treasured skyscrapers. From the beginning, Wright's connections to the building were strong. Edward Waller was its manager. William Winslow had his offices in the Rookery as did the American Luxifer Prism Company. In 1905, Waller commissioned Wright to remodel the skylit lobby and entrance area, which he lightened by using creamy white marble incised with Sullivansque ornamentation. William Drummond, once an assistant in Wright's studio, introduced a further remodeling in 1931. The entire building received a massive restoration in the late 1980s that brought it back to its 1905 grandeur.
The building is privately owned, but the lobby is accessible to the public during business hours.
