Once, this area was part of the "Riverbank" estate of George and Nelle Fabyan.

George Fabyan was a military diplomat for President Theodore Roosevelt, serving on the team which negotiated the Portsmouth Treaty, ending the Russo-Japanese war in 1905.

Around 1909, the Fabyan's commissioned a Japanese Garden for their home. I'll leave it to you to connect the dots...

The work progressed until at least 1922, which is the date on the bridge. It is unknown if the work was continous.

The estate was acquired by the the Kane County Forest Preserve District in 1939. The gardens were restored in 1976 and replanted in 1992.

Garden is open, from March through November, on Wednesdays and Sundays from 1 - 4. A $1.00 donation per person is requested. The garden can also be rented for special events and wedding photos.
