Dixie meet Mr. Lincoln. Beaverdam is one of only two places where the Dixie Highway meets the Lincoln Highway. At this crossing, they actually share the same road (Main Street between West and Church Streets) for about 1/4 mile through town.

Originally the Dixie was to cross the Lincoln highway 10 miles further south in Lima, Ohio, but a late change to a more direct route for the Lincoln Highway in 1920 moved the intersection in Beaverdam.

Michael G. Buettner's article from February 2006 states:
(visit link)

"The importance of the Dixie Highway was not lost on the writer of one Lima Daily News editorial. On July 29, 1915, he opined the following:

The Dixie Highway will be more valuable in one minute than the Lincoln Highway in one year, for the very reason that the resorters and persons planning trips up to Michigan will take the Dixie Road to reach their destinations. This will bring benefits to Lima business men, Lima hotels, and Lima in general. Get the highway, and let the other fellow fight about the route."

Mr. Buettner comments that this prediction rings true when you compare the modern Dixie Highway (I-75), which carries five times the traffic versus what the Lincoln Highway has developed into (US-30).

Lima did miss out on the Lincoln Highway, but the crossing was not that fruitful for Beaverdam. With a 2006 population of only 356 versus 38,219 for Lima, Beaverdam is the definative small town. The development of Lima as a manufacturing town, proved to be of much more importance than tourism from either highway to Lima's economic growth. Conversely, it could be argued that Beaverdam's dependence on tourism alone makes it somewhat of a footnote to the Dixie Highway story.
