In 1962, two astronomical figures ascended. That year, both the original Rauch Memorial Planetarium and original Mercury astronaut John Glenn went up respectively, on the University of Louisville campus and into orbit. On December 13, 1999, their paths once again crossed as the former astronaut broke ground for the new Rauch Planetarium and Gheens Science Hall.
The design of the new four-story center was inspired by Stonehenge, the prehistoric stone circle near Salisbury, England. Its lobby will house interactive exhibits, a gift shop and a semi-circular classroom.
