Corporal Frederick Lyon was one of twenty soldiers who was awarded the Medal of Honor for personal valor in action against Confederate forces at Cedar Creek, Virginia, on October 19, 1865. Together with Private James Sweeney, Corporal Lyon captured the flag of a Confederate regiment along with three officers and an ambulance with its mules and driver. Both men were awarded Medals of Honor for this heroic act.
