Established in 1897, the station was built for the San Francisco and San Joaquin Valley Railroad and is presently owned by the City of Hanford. Besides housing the Amtrak ticket counter/waiting room, the building contains offices for the City of Hanford Visitors Agency, Chamber of Commerce, and a private insurance company, as well as a small eatery. The station is conveniently located in downtown Hanford where many historic sites are within walking distance.
People riding Amtrak to places not serviced by rail can find appropriate busses waiting for them at this station during times when trains are arriving and departing.
The Amtrak station has undergone improvements(?) during the past year and now there are covered waiting areas across the tracks to accomodate people waiting for the Southbound trains. Unfortunately, there are no convenient crossings and travelers are required to walk the half block to 7th Avenue where they must cross and then walk back north to these gazebos. But they are pretty.
