The original Sumpter Valley Railroad began operations in 1890 from Baker City, Oregon and reached McEwen in 1891. The railroad reached Sumpter in 1896 and reached Prairie City in 1910. The railraod was a narrow gauge logging railroad which continued operations until 1947 when it closed down and all equipment and rails were sold off.
On January 4, 1971 the Sumpter Valley Railroad Restoration was incorporated as a non-profit operating a tourist railroad. In the fall of 1971 the railroad obtained a 1915 Heisler engine that had operated on the Sumpter Valley Railroad and by 1976 the engine had been restored and a half mile of track had been laid. Also in 1976 the railroad acquired two additional original Sumpter Valley Railroad engines. Today the railroad operates weekends over five miles of track between McEwen and Sumpter from Memorial Day to the end of September. A few of the weekends offer mock Train Robberies. In addition to the regular weekend season there are also a few special weekends for Fall Foliage and Christmas.
