James G. Penn built this historic home in 1876 and stands today in Danville’s Downtown Historic District. This home is one of Danville’s most notable examples of Victorian Architecture. Following the Civil War, Danville experienced a tremendous boom in the growth of the tobacco and textile industries and James Penn was one of the most successful and prosperous residents.

James Gabriel Penn came to Danville in 1868 and established himself as a tobacco merchant. In 1872 Mr. Penn formed a partnership that was known as Pemberton and Penn. This partnership allowed the company to extend their interests into foreign markets. By 1876 Penn was one of Danville’s increasing number of Millionaires and built this handsome home on Main Street in an area that was known as Millionaires Row. Over the years Mr. Penn continued to improve the home including additions in 1888, 1894 and finally in 1904 he built a carriage house from bricks taken from the Lipscomb house, which stood next door. James Penn died in 1907 and willed the property to his wife who eventually sold the property at public auction in 1934. Landon Wyatt purchased the property and retained ownership until his death in 1970, and in 1977 the Wyatt heirs sold the property to Dr. Allen Hoffman. Today the Penn-Wyatt House still stands on Millionaires Row and is maintained as a private residence.
