At 3,169 ft, Fremont Peak is Monterey County's highest mountain.
It offers spectacular 360-degree views at the Santa Cruz, Gavilan and Diablo ranges and the Santa Lucia Mountains. On a clear day, lucky visitors might be able to spot the Monterey Bay in the west or even the Sierra Nevada range to the east.

The peak was originally called Gavilan Peak but was later named after John C. Fremont who in 1846 raised the first US Flag on top of this hill.

From the last parking lot it is about a mile to the top. The hike is easy to moderate, except
for the last 20 feet of elevation which require a little bit of rock climbing.
