These two Sphinx Sculptures guard the entrance to the Lewis Family Crypt in Mt. Olivet Cemetery. Resting inside the crypt is Eugene Lewis who was director of the Tennessee Centennial Exposition of 1897. It was his suggestion that a full size reproduction of the Parthenon be constructed in Nashville’s Centennial Park. The Parthenon remains one of Nashville’s most popular tourist attractions. Mr. Lewis also served as chief civil engineer for the Nashville-Chattanooga and St. Louis Railroad and was the driving for behind construction of Nashville’s Union Station.
The matching sphinx sculptures are located at the entrance to the Lewis Family Crypt. Each sculpture stand about 3½-feet tall and sit on each side of the sidewalk leading up to the crypt.
