History sign on McCord Shop in Baker City Historic District.
Marker Name: McCord House and Shop
Marker Text: “McCord’s Corner” contributed much to Baker City history.
S. (Syrenus) B. McCord was the first mayor of Baker City. City residents elected him to four terms, and he also served several terms as county treasurer.
In 1873, McCord built the dwelling on this property. While he was mayor, he established a water system for Baker City, and had the first line installed to his house.
S.B. and his wife, Angeline, had 12 children, several of whom figured prominently in Baker County history. The shop was built in 1917 by one of S.B.’s sons, Nelson McCord. Originally it was a mechanic’s shop. Nelson later operated a grocery store in the building.
