From Montana: A State Guide Book - Glacier Park Tour 1
Right on this path to SUNRIFT GORGE, 0.2 m., a spectacular cleft in red
argillite hardly more than 10 feet wide, with vertical walls 25 to 50 feet high,
formed by a slip along a fault, and scoured into fantastic shapes by water.
Windfalls, overgrown with moss and lichens, are continuously moistened by a
curtain of mist from the rushing water below. Sunbeams slanting obliquely
into the gorge touch the mist with rainbow colors.
Sunrift Gorge is a popular stop along the Going-to-the-Sun Road. The
narrow gorge is much as it is described in the Guide. From the same
parking area there is a short hike to Baring Falls which is a beautiful falls to
visit. (pg 386-387)
