The church was built in 1862 with the assistance of Charles and Nancy Alexander, free born blacks from St. Louis by way of San Francisco. They joined the 800 or so Black people who moved to Vancouver Island in 1858 after being invited to do so by then Governor James Douglas.
The congregation was initially Methodists and Charles would also preach from the pulpit as for years there was no regular minister. It is unknown when the church became a United Church of Canada. Services are held Sundays at 9:30 AM and all are welcome. (HnGB4)
