Sign along Deschutes River above Lava Island Falls

Marker Name: Early White-water Rafting
Marker Text: In 1835 Nathaniel Wyeth became the first Euro-American to “shoot the rapids” on this river. Imagine white-water rafting in a dug-out canoe weighing nearly one-quarter of a ton.
Wyeth, a Boston ice merchant, left everything and headed West to pioneer - in business. His party of four endured cold weather and trying times, sometimes spending more time in the river than in the canoe. Often sick, always tired, the men survived by eating wild roots, beaver, water fowl - what ever they could find.
In the end Wyeth went home with little more than the shirt on his back and tales of bittersweet adventure.
