This statue, located at the south side of the bridge between the Progreso, Texas and Nuevo Progreso, Mexico, is an eagle eating a snake which is the symbol on the Mexico national flag.
According to a legend, the gods advised the Azetcs the place where they could build their city was to be identified when they saw an eagle perched on a prickly pear tree eating a snake. Tenochitlan, the current Mexico City, was to be built at a place where they found an eagle eating a snake and this statue is representative of the legend.
Nuevo Progreso is a great place to shop, get your teeth worked on, or just enjoy an inexpensive meal. Here is website which will tell you all about this special little place guarded by this beautiful statue.
