Construction of St Isaac's required 40 years , 1818 t0 1858. It was the largest church in Russia at the time it was built. The design was controversial but the plans by a little known French architect , Auguste Montferrand, were chosen with Tsar Alexander I having a major influence on the decision.
The style is neoclassical utilizing a traditional Russian-Byzantine plan with a Greek-cross ground plan, a large central dome and four corner domes. The building has four porticos each with 12 massive red granite columns, each weighing 80 tons. More granite columns surround the central dome. The exterior bronze doors are decorated with relief sculptures. The gilded dome can be seen from many vantage points throughout central St Petersburg.
The interior is decorated with huge columns of malachite and lapis and many very detailed mosaic icons. There is also a beautiful stained glass window, something not often seen in the Russian churches. A model of the scaffolding used to erect the columns is on display.
In the soviet years the church became a museum. Services are now held regularly in a small chapel and in the main part of the Cathedral on major church holidays.
