Sam Davis Capture Site - U.S. Civil War Sites on Waymarking.com

Located just south of Minor Hill, TN on Hwy 11, this is the site of the capture of Confederate Soldier Sam Davis. Often referred to as the "Boy Hero of the Confederacy" Sam Davis was riding behind enemy lines acting as a courier for the Confederate Army and was captured here on November 19, 1863. Davis was carrying papers outlining Union positions and these were discovered upon his person and he was arrested and charged as a spy although he was in a Confederate Uniform when caught. In a twist of irony he captors however were acting as spies, dressed and posing as Confederates which is how they got him. Davis was a part of a known spy operative service which had been successfully gathering and sending information to the Southern Army and in an effort to try and crack the network the Federals charged him as spy which meant he would be hanged. Hoping he would yeild information in trade for his life Davis was sentenced to hang, however no matter how hard pressed for information he was Davis refused to give up any of his sources, instead saying "I would rather die a thousand deaths than betray a friend or be false to duty". In another twist of irony, the man the Federals were seeing, the leader of the spy ring, was actually already in the very same jail where they took Davis after his capture. Refusing to yeild any information Davis was hung as a spy on November 27, 1863.
