The GUILFORD SCHOOL, SW. corner of Fourth and Ludlow Sts., is a public
elementary school that was completed in 1914; it has 26 rooms and can
accommodate 750 pupils. The school is named for Nathan Guilford
(1786-1854), a Yale graduate who helped secure passage of legislation
authorizing public schools in Ohio in the 1820's and was appointed Cincinnati's
first superintendent of schools in 1850.
A bronze tablet on the building commemorates Stephen Foster, who roomed in
a house on this site between 1846-50 (see Queen of the West). A D.A.R.
marker indicates that the site was part of the Fort Washington military
reservation.

The Guilford School has now closed and the building has been converted to
apartments. The building is well maintained. The plaques mentioned in the Guide
are still present on the building.
