Built in 1854, this gothic-revival cathedral, was the first home of the Catholic Archdiocese in San Francisco. In 1891, this was moved to a larger building on Van Ness Street. The building survived the 1906 earthquake only to be gutted by the subsequent fire that raged through town. Ironically (as of 2008), the cathedral is fundraising to complete seismic upgrades.
