Built at a cost of $160 Million (CAD) that was raised through private financing. The arena was constructed by the then owner of the Vancouver Canucks, A. Griffiths, because of problems with the Canucks first arena. The Pacific Coliseum, was owned by the Pacific National Exhibition, and there were issues regarding revenue from the luxury suites. To make the new arena more viable from a revenue standpoint, a NBA franchise was purchased and the Vancouver Grizzlies joined the Canucks as tenants in 1995. The Grizzlies where only there until the end of the 2000 - 01 season.
The Vancouver Canucks joined the NHL in 1970 during the second expansion in 3 years for the league. The first 24 years, they played at the Pacific Coliseum but have been at GM Place since 1995.
In the 38 years of playing in the NHL, the Canucks have always been a middle of the pack team but have flirted with greatness on occasion with 2 trips to the Stanley Cup in 1982 and 1994. They were beaten both times by teams from New York.
