Geology sign on crater rim trail.
Marker Name: Spatter
Marker Text: This deposit of lava on the crater rim was molten magma thrown out of the crater. The semi-fluid pieces of magma flattened out on impact with the ground surface and the edges welded together. The accumulation of these welded fragments makes a congealed mass known as spatter or agglutinate. If the mass is hot enough, it may form a small lava flow of coalescence spatter.
Behind you, across U.S. Highway 97, are the Gas Line Flows formed early in the eruption which built Lava Butte. The vents for these small flows are a series of small cones built of spatter and are known as spatter cones.
