McPherson county , population 553, is one of eleven Nebraska counties with fewer than a thousand residents. Tryon, population 90, is one of two unincorporated villages serving as county seat.

McPherson County, organized in 1890, originally included the area which is now Arthur county. The first courthouse was a sod house and it was used until a two story brick courthouse was built in 1926. That building had deteriorated by the end of the century and after it was damaged in a wind storm it was replaced in 2005 by a new one story brick Courthouse.
