Nos 23 and 24 Golden Square were occupied by the Portugese Legation between 1724 and 1747 [1]
During this time minister in London from 1739 to 1744 was the Marquess (or Marquis or Marquês - sources differ) of Pombal [1].
The Marquês of Pombal was a senior minister in the government of Joseph I of Portugal from 1750 to 1777, and considered to have been de facto head of state [2]. He was responsible for the rebuilding of Lisbon after the earthquake of 1755, and other reforms [2,3]
There is a square, a monument and a metro station dedicated to the Marquês of Pombal in Lisbon [3].
The plaque reads:
These two houses were the Portuguese Embassy, 1724-1747. The Marquess of Pombal, Portuguese Statesman, Ambassador, 1739-1744, lived here.
