The Sawdust Festival is a great summer activity for all ages. It includes an eclectic mix of hand-blown and fused glass, painting, jewelry, surf art, ceramics, clothing and textiles, wood and metal sculpture, scrimshaw, photography, and more. There are demonstrations like glass-blowing, art workshops, as well as hands-on activities throwing clay on a potters wheel. There are three outdoor stages for musical acts of all genres, and there is also roving entertainment like circus acts. The Sawdust Festival is one of the main summer attractions in Laguna Beach along with the Pageant of the Masters, Festival of the Arts, and Art-A-Fair.

According to the Art Festival's website, "The Laguna Beach Sawdust Art Festival is one of the main attractions for Laguna Beach, California each summer season. Over 200 artists set up shop for a couple of months usually starting the weekend before the Independence Day and lasting until the weekend before Labor Day.

The pathways connecting the temporary art studios are covered with sawdust and wooden chips. Beginning in 1966, the Laguna Beach Sawdust Art Festival has drawn visitors from all over the world looking for the one-of-a-kind arts and crafts offerings that can only be attained from the festival artists.

The Sawdust Art Festival is truly a local event. All artists exhibiting in the festival are residents of Laguna Beach. Unlike some other non-profit organizations dedicated to the arts, the Sawdust Art Festival's administration is made up of exhibiting members. Each year, exhibiting artists are elected as members of the Board of Directors. In addition, booth locations are determined by an annual lottery, usually held in February. Because the show is non-juried, enthusiastic amateurs display their work along with accomplished veteran artists, providing the spice and variety that make every show different from the last."
