Originally constructed as the Oakland-Alameda County Coliseum, this is part of an award-winning design with the adjacent outdoor stadium. The arena is designed as two separate structures. The external covering is a series of vertical diagonal supports, holding a roof suspended from a tension ring. The interior seating structure is entirely detached except for access ramps at the north and south ends. The arena originally held just over 11,000 for hockey, and 12,700 for basketball. The original tenant was the NHL Oakland Seals, and was later joined by the ABA Oakland Oaks. After the Oaks franchise relocated in 1970, the NBA Warriors moved from the spartan digs of the Cow Palace across the bay. The move of the hockey team, and a series of modifications raised the basketball capacity to 15,225, but the Warriors needed luxury boxes and more seats to remain competitive. In June 1995 the Warriors announced a temporary relocation to the San Jose Arena, and work commenced on a complete remodeling of Oakland Arena. 16 months later the Warriors returned to find a state of the art venue seating over 19,000. The largest indoor crowd in California history was recorded on April 10, 2008, when the Warriors hosted the Denver Nuggets before 20,737 fans.
