The first fortification on this sight was built in 1068 by William The Conqueror. Eventually this fortification was burned to the ground during a conflict between York's Jewish community and a non Jewish mob.
In the second half of the 13th Century the fortificaton was rebuilt in stone. It is the only fortification in England that was built in a quatrefoil plan, according to www.cliffordstower.com. (A more detailed history of this keep can be found at www.cliffordstower.com).
In 1322 Roger de Clifford was hanged here, causing the keep to be called Clifford's Tower thereafter.
