Whiskeytown Falls had remained mostly hidden for many years. Wildlife Biologist/Park Ranger Russ Weatherbee was cleaning out some old maps in the fall of 2003 and noticed a waterfall marked on the east fork of Crystal Creek. One day, he went out to look for it, and was unable to find it at the location where it was marked. Thinking that perhaps the map had been mismarked, he went back and pulled out a topo map and found a steeper spot upstream that looked promising. He also pulled out some arial photos that seemed to show some white water in that same location. Along with Geologist/Park Ranger Brain Rasmussen, he went out to look for it again. With no trails in the area, they traveled overland, eventually approaching the area from the top, where they "discovered" the estimated 300 foot cascading waterfall.
