The informational signage at the sight tells us:
During a Violent Southwesternly Blow on November 22, 1906, the wooden Steamer Conemaugh lost control on the Pelee Passage. It drove into the shoals several Hunrded meters out from here with such force that most of the blades of each propeller were broken off by the impact. Fortunately for the crew, the Pelee lifesaving station was nearly opposite on the shore.
From the Windsor Evening Record in 1906
"It would have been utterly impossible to launch an ordinary boat and it was only after the third effort that the life boat got away manned by seven men. The first wave filled the boat, but as fast as it filled itself, it emptied itself and rose and kept the surface. It filled several times during the trip to the wreck, but it seemed that the whole of Lake Eriie would not have swamped the boat. It soon go to the lee side of the vessel and took several of the crew away. It made three trips before it got the whole 22 men ashore."
