The sculpture is a series of intertwined vertical thin cones which could be branches or flames? It is metal and on a round plinth. The plinth has the words Museum Square on it and under that a plaque with the following words:

"This building was formerly a carriers warehouse and later a museum of local antiquities and natural history 1780-1870 was founded by PETER CROSTHWAITE 1735-1808. A native of this town, a naval commander in the East India Service and a man of considerable ingenuity. His grandson John Fischer CROSTHWAITE JP FSA 1819-1897 held numerous appointments for the welfare of his native town."

The sculpture was made by Alan Dawson Associates. Alan Dawson, the Managing Director of Alan Dawson Associates Ltd, was born and bred in West Cumbria, and after becoming a blacksmith he taught metalwork and art before setting up his own forge in 1972 in Balnakeil Craft Village, Sutherland. He later moved to Maryport in Cumbria, then on to Lillyhall where he is currently based, and from where the company still trades.
