Wat Chedi Luang was once 82 meters high and housed the Emerald Buddha (now in Bankok), but parts of it were destroyed in 1545 because of an earthquake. Today some of it has been rebuilt, and a replica of the Emerald Buddha has been substituted. This is one of the most visited sites in Chiang Mai, and there are also many other shrines and statues on the premisis.
