The 7 mile hike (3 1/2 miles in and out) begins from a parking area of National Forest Road 153 northeast of Grand Marais, Minnesota. Be sure you have a map of these gravel roads before you begin. You will pass see variety of landscape as you hike to Eagle Mountain and then climb to the top. (This is less mountain climbing than ascending a steep hill.)
The trail is relatively well maintained. I would recommend this trip for spring, late summer, or fall before the bugs begin in June or after they begin to tapper off in August.
You will find a survey marker and large metal plaque anchored in the ground at the summit.
On a clear day you will enjoy views to the west of Shrike, Eagle, Crow, and Zoo Lakes, Lake Superior to the South, Misquah Hills to the North, and the Brule Lookout Tower on Brule Lake to the Northwest.
You can obtain a day pass for hiking in the Wilderness at the parking lot. A small box with blank forms is provided. Fill in the information and slip it back into the box.
