The monument is located at the sandhills pasture site where Boone County Sheriff Lawrence Smoyer and Constable William Wathen were gunned down in the line of duty by two unknown assailants in June of 1937. The two lawmen had gone into the area to investigate a car with two well-dressed men which had been seen driving in and around the pasture area for several days, arousing suspicions about their intentions. After the lawmen drove through the gate, the strangers' car appeared over the hill, and when Smoyer and Wathen jumped out of their car the strangers started shooting. After the shooting, the men left the area, and their abandoned car (with 5 bullet holes in it) was discovered in Cheyenne, Wyoming. Their murders remain unsolved to this day. DO NOT TRY to access this area without 4 wheel drive. Please leave the gates as you found them.
