"Freeman's Corner", the northeastern corner of a 1.6 million acre block of land called the Vincennes Tract, was surveyed by Deputy Surveyor Thomas Freeman in 1802 and 1803. In 1806 Arthur Henri began the "Treaty of Grouseland" survey at this point by blazing a line N 65 E for eighty miles towards present day Brookville, Indiana. These surveys helped open up large blocks of treaty land to settlers and eventually to statehood for Ohio and Indiana.
