The Hendrick Van Allen house is situated on today's Route 202. It was an important colonial road linking Philadelphia with the Hudson River Valley and New England. The Continental Army used this route frequently and Washington spent the night here on one occasion.
It also served as the Bergen County court house in 1778 and 1779 when it was moved here as a temporary measure to avoid Tory raids.
