Grumman F-14D Super Tomcat 1987
General History:
For more than three decades, the F-14 Tomcat served as the long-range defender of the U.S. Navy's fleets around the world. As an interceptor armed with the Phoenix missile, the F-14 was able to shoot down enemy aircraft at distances of more than 100 miles. The Tomcat also became an international "movie star" after being featured in the 1986 feature film 'Top Gun."
Twenty five years after beginning production, Grumman offered the Navy the F-14 D-model, dubbed the Super Tomcat, which featured far more powerful engines and a complete glass-cockpit with advanced avionics. The Navy procured 36 of these aircraft, 18 built new and 18 converted from older A-model Tomcats.
This aircraft is one of the new-built F-14Ds, and flew combat missions during Operation Iraqi Freedom. The aircraft is on loan from the National Museum of Naval Aviation.
