Zilog is most famous for its 8-bit Z80 microprocessor, which was a competing chip with Intel's 8080 entry in the early days of personal computers. Federico Faggin left Intel, after working on the 8080 chip, to found Zilog in 1974. The Z80 was a cheaper, faster and more capable processor chip that the 8080. It was used in the Tandy TRS-80 personal computer, as well as the Sinclair ZX series and the Nintendo Game Boy. Zilog continued to advance the Z80. Now the company focus is on the microcontroller market.
