The Vaalkop dam is found only 54km from Brits, near Rustenberg and the beautiful Pielansberg National Park.
The campsites are very large and shady, each overlooking the Vaalkop dam. If one is enjoys casting from only meters from ones campsite, then this is the place to camp. The campsite is clean and small antelope species walk around at night. The birdlife is exceptional, but the fisherman can obstruct one from enjoying the wildlife, unless you're there to just fish of course.
The ablution blocks are adequate, but due to thieves stealing the cables in the reserve, there is no hot water or any working plug points. Each campsite has its own fireplace, perfect for those chilly evenings near the waters edge.
The Vaalkop dam is a beautiful place to spend the weekend away. Unfortunately the fishermen do ruin it a bit, but if one arrives early on a quite weekend, there is a very secluded spot near S25 18.302 E27 27.552, which is not a designated campsite, but the rangers will not mind you camping there.
One cannot book for the weekend, instead the rangers say that one must just come and find a spot, but it's better to phone ahead to double check. Prices are R60 per campsite per night.
