Despite wounds that would cost him his right arm, Henry S. Huidekoper continued to fight alongside the regiment he was commanding. For this heroic act Lt. Col.Henry S. Huidekoper was awarded the Medal of Honor. Despite losing his arm, he returned to duty for a brief period of time in 1863 and 1864. After leaving the Army, he became major general and senior brigadier general of the Pennsylvania National Guard. He also served for a time as the postmaster of Philadelphia.

Lt. Col.Henry S. Huidekoper is one of two Medal of Honor recipients remembered in a place of honor beneath the flag at Meadville's Greendale Cemetery.
