Located in Beadle County, South Dakota, Cavour has a population of 130 as of July 2007, a 9 percent decrease from the 2000 census.
The town was named for Carriello Benno, Count Cavour (an Italian statesman) to honor him as the real father of the railroads of Italy. The town was laid out by the Western Town Lot company in 1880.
Just a few minutes east of Huron, the town is a bedroom community for those who work in Huron.
The high school closed many years ago and the local children attend either Huron or Iroqois school system.
Cavour is the hometown of Michael Fitzmaurice, a Congressional Medal of Honor winner.
