A $7.5 million centre showcasing the pioneering heart of New Zealand's national identity has opened at the Hermitage Aoraki Mt Cook in early 2008.

The Sir Edmund Hillary Alpine Centre, designed to encompass and represent the human endeavour required to explore the majestic Aoraki Mt Cook landscape, is comprised of a state-of-the-art 3D theatre, a planetarium and a museum.

The Planetarium features a Sky-Skan Definiti Dome to show the Mt Cook night sky in a mixture of science and entertainment. It provides a spectacular audio-visual experience available only at the Sir Edmund Hillary Alpine Centre.

Visitors can also explore the southern sky from the Hillary Deck with expert astronomy guides. Telescopes ensure a close look at stars, planets, moon craters and distant galaxies.

Star Gazing prices range from $7.50 child to $31.00 for a family. Adult $15.50 and Senior Citizen $10.00 Planetarium Family Pass $50, Adult $25, Child $12.50.

Screening Times: Open 7 days a week. Please note the winter hours of closing fluctuate between 5pm -9pm please call 0800 68 68 00 to confirm screening times of 3D movie and planetarium features or check the information screens inside The Hermitage Hotel lobby. Star Gazing to explore the night sky: Every clear evening an experienced guide will take you through the southern stars from the Hillary Deck. Telescopes, binoculars, and star charts are also available. Prebookings are essential.
