Built in 1809, Park Street Church, on Boston's Freedom Trail, features this 217 foot steeple and bell tower, once the tallest landmark in the city. The church was designed by Peter Banning, inspired by the great London churches of Christopher Wren.

Boston is replete with historic churches - First Parish (the oldest) Old North Church, South Meeting House, Kings Chapel, Tremont Temple, Cathedral Church of St. Paul, Second Church in Dorchester, and so many more. But, Park Street Church, located across from the Boston Common downtown, and not far from the State House, is one of the most dramatic with its landmark 217-foot tall steeple and bell tower with clocks. It is one of the first stops on Boston's famous self-guided walking tour, The Freedom Trail.

It is sometimes called the "church of firsts" because of the many historic events and activities that have taken place here over the years. This year, as this waymark is posted, it celebrates it's bicentennial year, still a vital worshiping congregation and force of Christian love in the community.

PARK STREET CHURCH

The English architect Peter Banning designed
Park Street Church. It was built in 1809 on the
site of the old Granary for which the adjoining
burying ground, much older than the church,
was named.

On July 4, 1829, William Lloyd Garrison deliv-
ered his first anti-slavery speech here and so
launched his emancipation campaign with the
words: "Since the cause of emancipation must
progress heavily, and must meet with much
unhallowed opposition -- why delay the work?"
