This marker was placed here in 1929 by the Molly Stark Chapter of the D.A.R. to show the location of "Stark Fort" (not to be confused with Fort Stark in New Castle, New Hampshire).

The "fort" was actually a protective garrison for the nearby residents, who had suffered incursions by the native people. It was constructed by Lt. Archibald Stark, father of General John Stark. The site contains only this marker, and a filled-in well, which may be the original one installed in 1746. Some further information is available at: www.usgennet.org

The location is next to Precourt Park, and Nutt's Pond which is named for an interesting fellow. The nearby railroad shown on the map is actually abandoned, and now serves as a recreation trail.
