Povest o trutnovském draku je zasazena do období vlády knížete Oldricha. Ten prý poslal do pohranicních hvozdu svého vazala, pana Albrechta z Trautenberga, aby zde založil nové mesto a celil loupeživým tlupám. Dva zedníci z jeho remeslnické družiny, jakýsi Paul Firnera, Nikolaus Schlofsky, se pri hledání skalního lomu dostali do hlubokého lesa. Po dlouhém bloudení zaslechli silný havraní krik.
