Povest o trutnovském draku je zasazena do období vlády knížete Oldricha. Ten prý poslal do pohranicních hvozdu svého vazala, pana Albrechta z Trautenberga, aby zde založil nové mesto a celil loupeživým tlupám. Dva zedníci z jeho remeslnické družiny, jakýsi Paul Firnera, Nikolaus Schlofsky, se pri hledání skalního lomu dostali do hlubokého lesa. Po dlouhém bloudení zaslechli silný havraní krik. Zpocátku si ptacího hlasu nevšímali, ale krákání neustávalo. Muži šli za krikem a ten je privedl k divoké rokli, nad níž stála stará lípa. Zvedave pátrali, co se skrývá v temné strži. K svému prekvapení spatrili patnáct loktu dlouhého plaza, tlouštky dosti silného stromu. Jeho široká tlama byla otevrena, oci sršely ohnem, ocas se šroubovite vzpínal a telo mel pokryto velkými rohovitými šupinami. Když plaz zcepenel, rytír Trautenberg prikázal, at stáhnou jeho kuži. Ostatní cásti tela lidé zakopali. Potom kuži na slunci vysušili a vystavili ji k obdivu všech nahore na staré zámecké veži.


Od roku 1792 do 1892 byl drak umísten na trutnovskem namesti, pote byl prestehovan do parku, od roku 1903 je umisten v Draci fontane.
