Big Oak Tree State Park is the only remaining sizable tract of virgin wet-mesic bottomland hardwood forest remaining in the northern Mississippi Alluvial Plain section of the Gulf Coastal Plain biophysiographic province. The park is home to several champion hardwood trees, it was originally founded to protect a huge bur oak which died due to age and a lightning strike and was felled in 1954. There is a board walk which traverses the wet-mesic bottomland hardwood forest, allowing close view of the huge trees.
